This season of longing and waiting is coming to an end with the revelation of Christ in our midst. Christ comes in all humanity so that we are not frightened by the power of His divinity. He comes in all humility so that we might understand what true divinity looks like. He comes so that we may be partakers of His divine nature (2 Peter 1:4).
In the words of St. Paul:
Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance,he humbled himself...
St. Paul, (2 Phil:5-8)
At the heart of this mystery of the incarnation is Mary, the Mother of God, a humble virgin of a remote Palestinian village. Without her “Yes” to the Angel, God’s plan of salvation would have never been accomplished. So we honor her as the Theotokos, the God Bearer. We too are called to follow her example and to bring Christ to all we encounter – especially to ourselves.
