Praying with the O Antiphons

December 23, 2018

Chapter Talk – Fourth Sunday of Advent – December 23, 2018, cycle-C

Who Is Coming…

O Wisdom, your gentle power extends from one end of the earth to the other…it teaches us knowledge of self and of God, revealing the truth wherever deceptions appear.  Your Wisdom Word emerges out of the silent depths. O come, enlighten the darkness of our hearts and minds.

Who Is Coming…

O Adonai, you rule with justice and compassion, always with these two you make your judgments.  Your Law is the law of love, which you have stamped upon our hearts.  O come, inform our decisions and judgments with this same compassion and justice.

Who Is Coming…

O Root of Jesse, you blossom forth out of a seemingly dead stump!  You remind us that ‘those who lose their lives’ find newer, fuller life. O come quickly, you who root us in hope, for soon we shall see your salvation.

Who Is Coming…

O Key of David, you open the hearts that are closed and fearful.  You say ‘do not be afraid’.  O come, open us to your freedom and lead us in the ways of peace and everlasting life.

Who Is Coming…

O Dayspring, your sun rises over all the earth:  Rise in the heart of humanity with your light of justice and your healing rays.  O come, transform the darkness that blinds our minds to seeing the poor, the needy, our hurting earth.

Who Is Coming…

O Ruler of Nations, we desire your peace, which alone can unite us in serving the needs of humanity and our earth.  O come, make us realize how much we need one another and unite us in the knowing that You formed us all from the clay of the earth.

Who Is Coming…

O Emmanuel, God with us…and God who is to come: You, our hope: save us from our ignorance and pride. Heal our self-righteousness and egocentricity, so we will know that it is in Youthat we move and live and have our being.  O come, do not delay!
